The Fiesta isn’t even out, but it has already claimed a couple of 1st place titles. Spearheaded by YoYoJam and Bryan Figueroa, the Fiesta is the spiritual successor of the popular Aquarius. Made of celcon and designed for tight binds, smooth grinds, and amazing regens, it looks like this is the perfect 4A yoyo to add to your arsenal. It’s a great feeling when the biggest problem you have is that there are too many awesome tricks to fit into one clip video. That’s what kind of contest Cali States was this year. So much talent all around it was hard to cram everything into one video. I thought of doing another long video, a-la Decade, but I wanted to focus on making shorter videos. After all, not everyone has time to watch yoyo videos for 15 minutes at a time.

This video is everything that didn’t make it into the first video for various reasons. In some shots, the framing/lighting is bad, or maybe the camera is too shaky, or a yoyoer missed a string, etc. Don’t let that fool you though, the content is still as amazing as ever.

I spent a long time on the initial 2010 CA State Video, so I decided to throw this video together as fast as possible. Everything, except the render, was completed in roughly an hour. It just goes to show you that the quality of a video has everything to with the people that are featured. I may not have put much time into making this video, but there is still a lot of inspiration to be found.

This was 10 years ago: a humble contest, hidden between the busy streets of San Francisco. With an open freestyle division, players from all over California got to show off their routines to crowds of parents, fellow yoyoers, and the few passersby who happened to be in the right place at the right time.

This is now.

The 2010 California State Yo-Yo Championship featured over 100 competitors from around the world competing to claim the top prize. Prizes were no longer yoyos, but one thousand dollars instead. Crowds filled the two-story mall to see what yoyoing has evolved into. This video is a glimpse of the 2010 yoyo community as a whole.

Looking at the leap in skill over the last ten years, I can’t help be excited for what the next ten has in store for us.
